FAQ

Cancellation Policy & Late Appointments

Your appointment time is set aside specifically for you. If you are unable to make the appointment, or need to reschedule, 24 hours notice is required. This gives me a chance to offer the appointment to others waiting and to protect my time.

If you are unable to reschedule or cancel 24 hours prior to the appointment, the following fees will apply:

  • First missed or cancelled appointment: 50% of the appointment cost

  • Subsequent missed or cancelled appointments: 100% of the appointment cost

Future appointments will not be rescheduled until cancellation fees have been paid.

It should be noted that cancellation fees cannot be billed to your insurance provider, and they will be charged to the credit card kept on file.

If you are sick and cannot make your appointment, that is okay! Please do not come in to keep your appointment. If less than 24 hours, a $40 fee will only be applied if your appointment cannot be filled.

If you arrive late to your appointment, you will be charged the full appointment cost of the booked time. Additional time will not be added to your appointment to make up for time missed.

Billing Information

Direct billing is available for a variety of insurance providers.

What to Expect at Your Appointment:

In your initial appointment we will dive a bit deeper into your past health history, current health status and discuss your treatment goals. This helps me create a treatment plan tailored specifically to your needs. Your initial appointment time includes a detailed health history interview, assessments, hands on treatment and any home care items. The amount of time this takes varies depending on the complexity of your health status, so I recommend booking the appointment length that can accommodate this appropriately.

For example, an interview and assessment for a healthy adult with no current health concerns will take less than 10 minutes. If you book 1 hour, you will receive approx 45-50 minutes of hand on time.

An interview and assessment with someone who has more complex health history and/or injury history or has a current injury, interview and assessment can take up to 15 minutes. If you book 75 minutes, this will leave you with approximately 50-60 minutes of hands-on time.

We will go over your treatment plan which will include; the areas of the body to be worked on, types of techniques to be used, specific consent for sensitive areas (glutes, pecs/chest, abdomen, inner legs), level of pressure to be used, and any potential risks or side effects the treatment may cause. Consent can be altered or revoked at any time during our therapeutic relationship. This can include stopping treatment all together. Informed consent is a cornerstone of health care, and is very important to me to maintain in my practice. This gives you autonomy over your health care decisions and your body.

After your treatment is over, I will check in with you to see how you are feeling and we can review the treatment. If it’s applicable, I may prescribe self-care recommendations.

TLDR (Too long, didn’t read):

  • You arrive at your appointment

  • We will discuss your health history and current concerns

  • I will perform any assessments if deemed necessary

  • We will discuss a treatment plan

  • I will ask for your consent to the treatment plan

  • If you agree, I will leave the room to wash my hands

  • You can undress to your comfort level and hop onto the table, under the sheets

  • I will come back, and massage will commence

  • Massage is finished up, I will leave the room to wash my hands

  • You can get dressed

  • I will knock before re-entering the room

  • We will discuss the treatment and I will go over any home care items

The Treatment Space

My treatment space is located within Tailored Fitness at the Sparwood Mall. You can only access the gym via the outside doors. My room is barrier free and easily accessible with mobility devices.

If your appointment is after the gym’s opening hours, the door will be open and you can just come right on in! During our appointment, I will lock the outside doors so the gym is not accessible to the public while we are in your appointment. If this is an issue for you, we can discuss this further during your appointment.

The treatment space does have a large window that looks into the hallway of the main mall space. I have taken extra measures to ensure that when you are in the room, access from the public cannot happen. It is of the utmost importance to me that you feel comfortable and secure in this space.

There may be times when your appointment is scheduled while personal training sessions are taking place in the gym. The trainers are mindful of the noise level while massage is ongoing, but please note there may be additional talking or music noise from these sessions.

Massages will not be scheduled during group fitness classes.

You do not need to be a member of Tailored Fitness to book with me!

Boundaries & the Therapeutic Relationship

Living in a small town as a health care practitioner can make maintaining healthy boundaries difficult, but not impossible.

We enter a contract as a patient and a practitioner when you book with me. Even if we have a previously existing relationship, once you step into the massage space, our relationship changes from friends to patient and therapist. There is a significant distinction there.

There will always be an imbalance of power in the practitioner vs. patient relationship, and it is always my job to manage that power and give you the power of choice. I try to balance this using plain and understandable language, informed consent, and respect for you and your bodily autonomy.  If you have any special concerns or requirements for your treatment or if you have experienced trauma that may have an impact on your massage experience, I encourage you to share this with me.

Please remember that this is a judgement free space, and i’m here to help you. You can share this with me at the beginning of your session, or if it is easier for you you can reach out to me via email before our appointment.

I will always conduct myself professionally. Your personal and health information will always be kept confidential.

On the flipside, inappropriate behaviour towards your RMT will result in immediate termination of the session. This includes any form of inappropriate behaviours including sexual comments, gestures, advances, threatening behaviour and direct or indirect discrimination. The client will be charged the full amount for the session, and the therapeutic relationship will be terminated. Further appointments will be denied.

  • Muscle tension and stiffness

  • Chronic pain

  • Overuse injuries

  • Post-surgical healing (with clearance from your GP)

What Types of Massage are Offered?

I am trained in a variety of techniques to help deliver a relaxing and effective treatment tailored specifically for you. These techniques include:

  • Swedish massage

  • Myofascial techniques

  • Joint mobilization

  • Active stretching techniques, also known as proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation or PNF

  • Trigger point therapy

But wait, what about DEEP TISSUE???? I know, I know, it’s what many people want. The truth is that “deep tissue” is a buzz word. I might have just lost some clients already, but hear me out! During your massage, I am constantly assessing the state of your tissue. We always start out superficially, warm up with tissues, and then start working “deeper”, which is just another word for working with intention. Sometimes “deep tissue” isn’t always what our body wants, as increased pain can send us further into “fight or flight mode”, rather than the more desirable and relaxing “rest & digest” mode. That being said, we all have different needs and our discomfort thresholds vary drastically. I will always do my best to deliver a healthy balance of pressure for you, but morally I cannot advertise the promise of deep tissue massage.

Safety & Hygiene

I follow all health and safety protocols written out by the College of Complementary Health Professionals of BC (CCHPBC). This means that all equipment is sanitized in between clients. Fresh linens are used for each session. I do not use scented laundry products, and my linens are washed separately from any personal laundry.

I maintain strict personal hygiene practices, which includes minimizing my personal use of heavily scented products.

In that regard, for the comfort of all my clients I ask my clients to limit their use of heavily scented products before their appointments. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Perfumes and colognes

  • Hair products

  • Aftershave

  • Cigarette, cannabis or vape smoke

I ask my clients to be conscious of strong body odours. This can be a sensitive subject, and if you need to discuss it with me I am always ready to listen.

Do I Need to Tip My RMT?

Please don’t! Registered massage therapists are considered to be health care professionals. It is not ethical or necessary for us to accept tips, as our fees reflect our treatment planning, assessment time, charting and actual treatment time.

If you were happy with your treatment, recommending me to your friends or family or just leaving a good review is just as lovely!
